This is a rather famous shoetree, possibly the biggest in America.  It even merited a half-page article in the New York Times, according to roadsideamerica.com.
After traveling America’s Loneliest Road and seeing naught much but the basins and ranges in their all their harsh glory, this cottonwood rises by the side of the road like a cheery signpost of civilization.  More than that it is evidence of an imagined community with a ridiculous sense of fun and that invites you to join for only the price of a pair of shoes.  Is it participatory public art?  Maybe it’s littering.  It makes me happy.
