Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site. Northeast of La Junta, Colorado. August 2003.

On a former border with Mexico, this is a reconstructed version of an 1840s fur trading post.  The adobe fort looks much like some kind of ship in this picture, its almost comic (if not pathetic) little cannon pointed out across the vast prairie sea.  Since this commercial fort was a model of cultural tolerance, this cutie was probably put in a bit later in 1846 when national relations with Mexico soured.
